St. Lawrence Academy to compete at senior high math championships

The St. Lawrence Academy team of Stefan Slaney, Chad Miller, Michelle Edwards and Tyler Drake will represent the region at the Senior High Mathematics League 2011 Provincial Championships in St. John’s May 7.

Students from the winning school along with Lawn’s Holy Name of Mary Academy, Marystown Central High, Burin’s Pearce Junior High, St. Joseph’s Academy, Grand Bank’s John Burin High participated in three virtual math league competitions at their schools throughout the year.

MCHS hosted the final competition Thursday to determine the regional senior and junior champions.

A pair of teams from the host school tied for second place in the senior competition. One team included Roger Mallay, Kyle Beck, Darren Stokes and Mark Biggin. The other consisted of Alex MacBeath, Heather Drake, Luke Parrott and Josh Stacey.

Placing first for the juniors was the team of Brandon May, Zachary Green and Robyn Vivian from Pearce. In second place were Michael Lambe, Trevor Slaney, Caitlin Loder and Hope Parsons from St. Lawrence Academy.

Meanwhile, third place finishers Tiffany Lambe, Kristina Slaney, Steve Etchegary and Jordan Lambert were also from St. Lawrence.

Winning team members for both categories received individual medals, certificates and a school plaque.

The event is coordinated by a group of teachers who donate their time to encourage and support the region’s math league.
