Cole Murphy of Little Bay, Marystown is The Southern Gazette’s ‘Carrier of the Year’ for 2011.
The 13-year-old son of Bill and Anne Marie Murphy is a student at Pearce Junior High School in Burin and has been delivering the paper for the past three to four years.
Like many of our carriers, Cole’s route was handed down to him from a relation, in this instance a cousin. He also has a younger brother waiting in the wings.
Heading out roughly 5:30 or 6 o’clock every Tuesday evening, he has some 28 subscribers.
Mrs. Murphy suggested the job offers many benefits including the obvious.
“It’s good money for them.”
Indeed, Cole indicated he has saved his earnings to buy several things he wanted, such as a television, pellet gun and a Playstation 3.
Crystal Rogers, The Southern Gazette’s Customer Service Representative, dropped by the Murphy home last week to present him with a $50 cash prize.
Presently into rabbit hunting, he thought he might use the money to buy some gear for snaring.
Referring to a previous promotion from the paper, Cole acknowledged he was a little surprised to learn he had won when he was contacted by phone.
“Yeah, because a couple of years ago I won an Ipod.”
Congratulations, Cole, and keep up the excellent job!
