Melvin John Lambe, a longtime community leader on the Burin Peninsula and Director for Region 2 of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services, passed away suddenly Mar. 27.
He was undergoing treatment at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's. Melvin, a resident of Little Bay-Marystown, was 59.
Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador, said "Volunteers give of themselves freely and with full devotion. Today we mourn the loss of a man who was much more than a volunteer; Melvin was a beloved husband, father, and son.
"He was a significant contributor to his community, and this province."
Mr. Lambe's community involvement was endless. In 1989, he rejoined the Marystown Fire Department after serving two and a-half years in the late 1970s.
As a firefighter, he served as the president/chairperson of his fire department for the past three years. He was elected as a director for Region 2 in 2007, for the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services, representing fire departments from the Bonavista to the Burin Peninsulas.
He was a municipal councillor with the Town of Marystown from 1980-1985, served on the local Roman Catholic Parish Council and was an active member of the former Burin Peninsula RC School Council and later Eastern School District for the region.
Burin-Placentia West MHA/Tourism Minister Clyde Jackman called "Melvin a dedicated family man and a fine gentleman. His commitment to the community was straight from the heart. He was a thoughtful, considerate, and genuine individual."

I knew Melvin and my Dad, Don Brake, knew him well and respected him greatly,first class gentleman on all counts.
Melvin will be greatly missed by his family and friends. So very sorry for their great loss.

Rest in peace good and faithful servant. I too have many memories and in the end, memories are a wonderful priviledge. Rest in peace!
