The Canadian Postmasters and Assistant Association (CPAA) has received notice Canada Post Corporation plans to eliminate hours at rural post offices.
The CPAA, which represents rural postal workers in Newfoundland and Labrador, believes these hour reductions could affect the standard of service for customers.
Employees are being told the reductions are related to falling revenues, not falling customer numbers.
The CPAA said “this tells us the focus is on revenue and not on customers.”
In Newfoundland, Canada Post has informed the union some 192 hours will be eliminated in this round of reductions. Post Offices in Marystown, Burin, St. Lawrence, Fortune and Grand Bank will likely be affected.
The union insisted “If these reductions are implemented there will be a negative impact on the services, as well as the earnings of affected employees, the majority of whom are women.
“It will mean the loss of income vital to the social and economic well-being of our communities.”
The union has written town councils requesting their support to insist the federal government halt this process, which could result in a further erosion of postal services in rural Canada.
