Caitlin Drake of Burin will receive one year of free tuition, valued at up to $1,452, which she will use to attend the Sheet Metal Worker program.

For Caitlin, the news couldn’t have come at a better time. Both of her parents were affected by the recent announced closure of the High Liner fish plant, and she was working two jobs, while planning to apply for a student loan to pay for her post-secondary education.

Caitlin recalled “We had a tour of the (CNA) campus earlier this year and I wasn’t sure what I was going to go into. I looked into all the programs and then I looked into the trades, because my brother did a trade too.”

She said she’s always been a hands-on type person, so she decided to take the Sheet Metal Worker program after hearing good things from another student.

“I was talking to the teacher of the Sheet Metal program and he said he could get me down to sit in on a class and see what it’s all about. There was one girl in the class and I was talking to her and she loved it.

“I was really interested in it so I applied and got in.”

The 2012 Spring Orientation Tuition Giveaway was open to individuals accepted to CNA for the 2012-13 academic year, who attended Spring Orientation at one of the college’s 17 campuses.
