Rex Matthews has announced he will be seeking the Mayor’s position in Grand Bank again in the upcoming Municipal Election.
Mr. Matthews, who has previously served has Mayor and Councillor for the town, feels there has been few accomplishments in the community over the past four years, and “the town lacks leadership, vision and direction.”
He indicated despite an increase in taxes, there is little to show in terms of municipal infrastructure development and other projects that benefit the community and its residents. The candidate stated he also has some concern with the financial direction the town has taken, the demise of the Grand Bank Development Corporation as we knew it and the implementation of a waste disposal fee when other major towns on the peninsula, like Burin and St. Lawrence, didn’t charge their residents any extra fee for this service.
Mr. Matthews claimed “Council should have been more pro-active in having the old cottage hospital removed, and trying to attract investors for the construction of senior cottages on the site.”
He wants a more concerted and united effort is required to have the ‘MV Atlantic Pursuit’ removed from the harbour to free up much needed and valuable wharf space.
Mr. Matthews noted more emphasis and attention needs to be placed on our fishing industry, manufacturing industry and other businesses in the town to ensure they continue to have a bright.
The candidate said he is looking forward to going door to door in the next couple of weeks and getting the opinions and views of the citizens.
Incumbent mayor Darryl Lafosse is also offering for re-election providing voters a rematch of the 2010 Grand Bank mayoralty election.
