Marystown town council is calling on Mayor Sam Synard to step aside from his position for violating conflict of interest rules.

Town of Marystown

Coun. Leonard Pittman tabled a notice of motion during Tuesday evening’s council meeting stating that Synard was advised several times during a closed-door discussion about a year ago that he was in conflict.

The matter involved a sewer line that was installed by Synard's brother's estate on Marine Drive.

Arguing it was a discussion and not a meeting, the mayor disagreed he was in a conflict of interest and took part in the conversation, Pittman said.

The notice of motion passed unanimously with Pittman, Coun. Ruby Hoskins, Coun. Darlene Lafosse Blagdon and Coun. Lisa Slaney, who chaired the meeting while Synard stepped out of the room, all voting for the mayor to resign.

Deputy Mayor Al Spencer and Coun. Mary Beth Farrell were not present for Tuesday’s meeting.

Synard didn't respond or comment on the notice of motion during the remainder of the meeting.

More to follow on Wednesday.

This article has been corrected to reflect Coun. Leonard Pittman tabled a notice of motion and not a motion.

In response to Bob need to speak to Sam and get the correct information,,for starters the "GROUP OF SIX" do not hire..there is a hiring committee, and also you need to know that Mr. Synard had ample opportunity to attend the interview process and im guessing decided not Bob>>>>maybe you should attend a few council meetings and see how childish Mr. Synard is before you make uninformed comments backing him or run for council yourself next time around.

Let me start by saying "Give the Mayor the resumes, what are the group of six hiding". There is something terribly underhanded when a Mayor cannot see resumes of the people residently hired by the group of six. Get rid of this crowd and bring on a new election.

maybe all that like to blow off about council, without knowing the facts , should go to council meetings, and see first hand what council does, try opening a new door and learning the truth, before blowing off about things you have no clue about , know before you blow!

Seems like the Mayor doesn't like playing in the sandbox, unless he can bully everyone into thinking and acting like him, a petty , selfish child. Stomp your feet a little harder, and whine a little louder, maybe Muncipal affairs will give you your way, and give you an election, so you can give the people of Marystown the option of giving you the boot! Maybe there is a Santa Claus after all.

I really dont care about any of the drama going on in marystown..but i would like Mr. Synard to be careful what he wishes for. He must remember he only was elected once, when he defeated Mayor Walsh. and to the unknown author who said the council closed down a coffee shop on the day it opened, I wonder why 6 councillors would do that? Maybe they all woke up that morning and thought...hmmm..we should stop that coffee shoppe from opening today..I think not. No doubt there was a good reason. again i dont care for any mayor or councillor. I think the mayor needs to grow up and stop acting like a spoiled child that just had their i phone taken from them

I think all the support on here is mayor Sam himself , posing as different people, making posts to make him self look better. Not one post with a positive comment for Sam has a real name. We are on to you Mr. Mayor

This has to be the worst council to date! All they are concerned with is getting their friends and family hired and disregarding concerns of resident. A friend of mine was interviewed for recreation director telling them everything possible to deter interest from job. The posting advertised education qualifications such as a degree, which most applicants had, and the job goes to one of the councils buddy's who did not meet the qualifications. Matters like this should not be overlooked and I'm glad it will finally get investigated! Time for this council to go!!

I agree with onlooker time for the new council to go they are not doing anything good for Marystown only putting the town back.

well maybe Sam isn't the only one in conflict of interest. There are a few business's in the town with direct and indirect connections with the council whose business are always buying points for tickets for town events, ie concerts, hockey events, etc, although they don't reap any benefit from the sale of tickets its an indirect way of increasing the traffic to their stores. So in my opinion this is still a conflict of interest and probably some free advertising

Well if that don't beat all....You ad a group that wanted Sam gone and elected a whole new council and got it. They wanted the new council to clean up the "backdoor" politics and thats what they're doing. As for "Drama" the only one doing the drama is Sam himself.....reminds me of a child throwing a tantrum when he can't get what he wants....because of the new council that we elected to do just that! Good job guys errrr gals and guy! It seems to me that the people of Marystown can't make up their minds...You wanted the "dirty politics" , "old boys club" and "back door politics" done away with yet you now want to have the old ways back.....time to make up your mind people and stop being "Two Faced"!

The people see whats going on in marystown . The new council has caused but trouble and they do not care what the people thinks. They tried to shut down a coffee shop on the day it was opening for the first time. Drove targa out of town . Do not respect the agreement of the town workers. Sam is not the bad guy here ,its 3 or 4 big mouths and you know who you are

I would like to know where TAXPAYER 3 got their information....who hired their what and when??..facts..and where did you get this information..who are you talking about???..and as for council doing as they please...Im sure there are protocols and policies for the hiring of staff or town workers...thats just not even sensible for you to make such an argument....1 dont know who is doing what. It just seems that 1 mayor is right and 6 councillors are wrong, I would say the mayor has a grudge against these people for holding him accountable !!

I think that the issues need to be made public before everyone jumps on the council..I find it very hard to believe that Mr. Synard is the angel in this there was a unanimous vote apparently by all councillors...These present councillors are all well educated mature people that have probably served on many organized committees and are not just new kids on the Mr. Synard has made them out to be..and as for the residents comment that thinks the mayors name is being muddied...give an example..I have not heard one councillor make any derogatory remarks about the mayor..I have heard of the mayor taking pieces out of other councillors...maybe alot of the previous commenters should put their names in front of their posts.....This council may actually clean up the mess of previous years..and the mayor should know that times are a changin..and technology is the way of many meetings in the future....he should try and keep up with the times himself...

This council, which I campaigned for, has continually attempted to drag Mr. Synard's name through the mud....I am unsure the reasoning but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The reason myself and other residents voted the old council out was to shed a light on some of the goings on of the old crew. Not to produce a soap opera that embarrasses a great town. It seems it is always the same councillors attacking Mr. synard led by Mr.Pittman....I say get over whatever petty BS you have and move on with the business at hand...running this town! ENOUGH DRAMA!!!

Could not agree more. Sam synard has perform well as our mayor and Mr. PITTAMAN is always mouthing off. Bring the vote to the people of the town. Also Mr.Pittaman only got in by the skin of his teeth

    September 02, 2015 - 10:04

Well for starters>>I dont think Mr. Pittman ran for mayor..and as for a 20+ something mayor...Its about time there is a council willing to clean up the mess and corruption that has been infiltrated by the past 20+ years of some previous council members(SOME NOT ALL)..I applaud this council for standing up to such a dictator and making for a better town...the old boys club is gone.....great job by our council..and i'm sure most of the negative comments are coming from a very small group of mayor supporters...Stick to your guns and do our town proud as you have been doing..good job..

Might be time for this to happen. With everything going on lately due to issues with him it might be time. After listening to him talk about how his roundabout plan had to happen and there being "no other way", to now the idea being scrapped and no longer going ahead. To this issue now, conflicts of interests are still conflicts of interest no matter how big they are. To go as far as insulting people and calling them clowns? Seems like someone has convinced themselves that they own the position indefinitely and can do what they want. Maybe it's time for someone new to come in and take over.

I would vote everyone else out of counsil . Seriously , is this what they do with their time ? And it took them a year to get this far with a complaint ? What for ? A sewer line that was located next to his brother's property ? Can anyone tell me what this conflict of interest is ? All I see are counsil members who are in conflict of the town's best interests by wasting time and resourses on a soap opera mentality !!

It is time for a new Municipal Election, obviously this new council has no idea how to run a town. They are destroying what the previous councils have strived so hard to put in place. They cannot agree on any topics and personal vendettas are getting in the way of good decisions. The people of Marystown deserve to have confidence in our council, we are the ones that put them there, and we are the ones who can take them out, and its time. The rumors of this council has been nothing only dysfunctional. When you think that they can do this to a 20+ Mayor of our town, that says a lot about the character of this council. Its unbelievable to think that's what we have running our town.

I tend to agree with the above comment! When one considers all that Mayor Synard has done for this town, to be asked to step down because he participated in the discussion, in a conflict of interest position! As a taxpayer, following many of the recent controversies around the Town table, it's sounding like a witch hunt, to me.

Unbelievable! I've heard rumours throughout town about how dysfunctional this new council is. if you won't go along with us, we'll get rid of you - even if we have to make up stuff and destroy your reputation to do it!

Conflicts of interest should always be taken seriously. It doesn't matter how big or small they are. It goes to the integrity of the system.

They really must want this man out of office. Having him step down because he took part in a discussion over a sewer line being installed close to his brothers property. Really? There is more going on here than meets the eye I think.

I agree! If this is the best they could find against a 20+ yr mayor with a stellar national reputation in a prosperous town someone has an axe to grind!
