Laurentians hammer Western United in weekend goal fest

The St. Lawrence Laurentians hammered Western United by a combined score of 15-0 in a pair of provincial men’s Challenge Cup matches at home over the weekend.

The Laurentians hammered Western United by a combined score of 15-0 in a pair of provincial men’s Challenge Cup matches at home over the weekend.

Paul Slaney scored St. Lawrence’s first goal at 33 minutes on Saturday in a 6-0 win, which served to open the floodgates for the Laurentians.

Other scorers included two penalty kick goals from Mike Howlett, to go along with singles from Sean Edwards, Boyd Roul, and Rudy Norman. John Douglas and Shane Etchegary shared the shutout victory.

On Sunday, St. Lawrence walloped the Corner Brook squad again, this time 9-0 on the strength of a terrific afternoon from Howlett, who hit the twine four times. Norman had a pair of markers, while Roul scored another, in addition to Richard Kelly and John Grant. Shane Etchegary posted the shutout.

In other weekend Challenge Cup action Saturday, St. John’s U18s defeated CB Auto Strikers 5-1 and Mount Pearl dropped the Feildians 6-1.

Sunday, Mount Pearl blanked the St. John’s U18 squad 5-0, while the Feildians shutout CB Auto Strikers 3-0.

The weekend wins by St. Lawrence and Mount Pearl keeps the two teams tied for second place in the standings with 41 points a piece, seven back of league leading Holy Cross. All three now have four games remaining on the season.

Tonight, the CB Auto strikers are at home against Holy Cross in a rescheduled game.

This weekend, the Laurentians are on the road for a pair of matches on the Avalon Peninsula.

St. Lawrence plays the Feildians at King George V in St. John’s at 4 p.m. Saturday, before heading to CBS for a noon match against the CB Auto Strikers Sunday. In other play, Western United visits Mount Pearl on Saturday and Holy Cross Sunday.

Last Wednesday, league leaders Holy Cross defeated the Feildians 3-0 on two goals by Ryan Yetman and a single from Jeremy Babstock.

A week prior, St. Lawrence goalkeeper John Douglas posted shutouts in a pair of victories against Feildians at home.

On Saturday, Aug. 7, the Laurentians received single tallies from Paul Slaney, Rudy Norman, Mike Howlett and Stefan Slaney in a 4-0 win. Paul Slaney opened the scoring again the next day and Jon Grant added the other as St. Lawrence won 2-0.

Mount Pearl was on the west coast for two games against Western United in Corner Brook.

United got off to a quick start in the opening match, when Patrick Fewer putting his team up at the 7-minute mark. Mount Pearl’s Tyler Forsey, a native of Fortune, tied the match at 38 minutes, before teammate Justin Pickford made it 2-1 at 68 minutes. The score held up the rest of the way.

Pickford, Matthew Hamlyn and Iain MacCleod each scored in the first half of Sunday’s 3-1 rematch.

In other play that weekend, Holy Cross hammered the St. John’s U18s 8-0 Aug. 8 at King George V. The St. John’s U18 squad rebounded the next day to blank the CB Strikers 3-0 at Sgt. Ned Nugent Field in Conception Bay South. Chris Lowe, Sean Fardy and Kyle Bonia scored the goals, while Alex Calon posted the shutout.

PLAYOFF SCHEDULED ANNOUNCED  

The Molson 2010 Challenge Cup playoff schedule has been announced.

The Burin Peninsula Soccer Association is hosting this year’s event Sept. 3-5 at St. Lawrence Centennial Field.

The top four teams in the final regular season Challenge Cup standings advance to the playoffs.

On Friday, Sept. 3, the top two teams in the final standings square off at 2 p.m. in the first of the day’s two matches, followed by the third and fourth ranked teams in the second game at 5 p.m.  

The losing team from the first match plays the winner of the second game Saturday, Sept. 4, at 3 p.m., to determine who moves on to Sunday’s final. The victor from Friday’s first match automatically advances to the championship, where an opening ceremony is set for 2:30 p.m., with kick-off at 3:30 p.m.

The Challenge Cup all-star team and individual award winners will be announced during the opening ceremony.
