Moulton, Bursey repeat as provincial junior champions

Deanna Moulton of Grand Meadows Golf Club won her second straight junior girls' title as the Newfoundland and Labrador Golf Association provincial junior golf championships concluded Thursday.

The Winterland native recorded an 84 on the final day at the Grand Falls Golf Club.

Moulton was 10 strokes of ahead Day 2 leader Angela Earle (Humber Valley Resort) who shot a 100, but managed to hang on to second ahead of Jayne Hamlyn (Grand Falls). Earle also took the girls' bantam division crown.

In the girls' juvenile division, Raylene Mackey (Glendenning) shot her second straight 88 to finish four strokes ahead of clubmate Lorraine Coleman whose three-day total was 299. Jillian Lawlor (Glendenning) finished third with a tourney total of 304.

Blair Bursey also repeated as both the boys’ junior and juvenile division champ.

The Gander Golf Club phenom carded a final round 77 for a three-day total of 229 at the Grand Falls Golf Club.

In fact, the top three finishers in both the boys' junior and juvenile divisions were the same as Nathan Peters of Clovelly Golf in St. John's and Ryan Burton of Blomidon in Corner Brook tied in the runner-up positions with three-day scores of 240. Peters shot a 75 in the final round while Burton carded a 73, the low score of the day.

In boys' bantam play, Drew Stonehouse (Clovelly) shot an 82 Thursday for a 12-stroke win over clubmate Jack McCarthy, who finished with 260 strokes. First-time provincial competitor Mitchell McGrath of Glendenning in St. John's was third with a three-day total of 265.

The top three male and female finishers will comprise the provincial team that will compete at the national junior boys and girls’ championship at the end of the month.

The Canadian boys' championship is being held at the Osprey Ridge Golf Club in Bridgewater, N.S., while the girls will head to Calgary's River Spirit Golf Club.
