O’Brien’s Music Store closes for good

It was thought to be the oldest shop on the oldest street in North America, but this week, O’Brien’s Music Store closed its doors for good.

Open since 1939, the business has gone bankrupt, forced to close its doors after falling behind in taxes.

“It’s the up and down of retail,” owner Gord O’Brien told The Telegram, noting other issues, like parking, weather and snowclearing challenges that come with operating a business in downtown St. John’s, as well as competition on the Internet.

O’Brien said he won’t be reopening the store from another location, but will continue to do instrument repairs as a home business.
