Two men were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries around noon today (Monday), following an accident at the intersection of Creston Boulevard and Marystown-Burin highway. The men were the lone occupants in a pair of vehicles involved in the accident. The Marystown Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, and had to use the Jaws of Life to remove one of the men. Marystown RCMP said the cause of the accident was still under investigation. Defence Minister’s insensitive remarks appalling – Foote Post a comment 

Random-Burin-St. George’s MP Judy Foote was appalled by the recent remarks by the Minister of Defence Peter MacKay. Mrs. Foote claimed the remarks brought into question the credibility of the women who have been speaking publicly about the objects they saw in the sky.

Sobeys officially announces new store View comments1 

It was the worst kept secret in Marystown and the Burin Peninsula over the last several months. Even Mayor Sam Synard suggested he was unaware of the answer to the secret.

But Wednesday morning Sobeys Inc. issued a release, from its head office in Stellarton, N.S., it would open a new grocery store in Marystown this fall.

After 31 years in Marystown, Dominion closed its doors for the last time Sunday. Apparently unable to reach a suitable lease agreement for the space in Peninsula Mall, Loblaw Companies Ltd. held true to its word and closed the store, which had employed some 70 people. It wasn’t a bird, plane or Superman. That much is certain. No one seems to know for sure just what three mystery objects were that appeared in the skies over the Burin Peninsula Jan. 25.

The provincial government has approved $286,200 to begin implementation of the Burin Peninsula Waste Management System. The bulk of the funds – $260,800 will be used to upgrade the Fortune-Grand Bank waste disposal site as an interim sub-regional landfill. The remainder – $25,400 will engage BAE-Newplan Consultants to finalize the conceptual design for the regional system.

The provincial government has reduced its number of planned new ferry constructions to four, from the original five. Auditor-General John Noseworthy Thursday identified this in his annual report on government expenditures and procedures as of Mar. 31, 2009.

In most regions of North America today, Feb. 2, is called ‘Groundhog Day’. But in Newfoundland and Labrador, the day was once called ‘Candlemas Day’ or ‘Calmest Day’.

Smallest hawk nabs live prey Post a comment 

The ‘sharp-shinned Hawk (juvenile)’ has been spotted near a bird feeder in St. Lawrence catching sunrays during the peninsula’s recent cold temperature spell. This small hawk is a regular visitor to bird feeders, where it eats birds, not seeds!

The ‘Taliban Trust Fund’: Modern day Danegeld? View comments1 

The Taliban Trust Fund’s aim is to have ‘insurgents pledge to renounce violence and ties to al-Qaida, and embrace democracy’. The fund was announced in England last week following a meeting of UN countries.

This book began as a song written by Maggie Rose Parsons and her grandfather, Gary Collins. The lyrics and musical score are printed at the end of the book. I s’pose it’s the musical score; it’s a set of those lines with the squiggly musical notes on them – treble clefts or something ...
