Family’s Janeway support reaches quarter-century

May 25 was a special day for the Hodder family of Marystown. On that Saturday, the family gathered for its annual walk-a-thon in support of the Janeway Children’s Hospital.

The Hodder family of Marystown has held an annual walk-a-thon each of the past 25 years as a fundraiser for the Janeway Children’s Hospital. The event is a memorial for Lisa Jane Hodder, who passed away after a battle with cancer in 1988. This year’s contribution was presented during the Janeway Telethon weekend, with the total now surpassing $100,000. Photo Submitted

It marked the 25th year in a row they have raised money for the facility.

In February 1988, 10-year-old Lisa Jane Hodder, a daughter of Cecil and Lillian Hodder of Creston North, lost her battle with cancer. That first year, the Hodder family pulled together and made a donation to the Janeway in her memory, and they haven’t stopped since!

Including money raised from this year’s walk, the family has raised over $100,000.

To mark the 25th anniversary Lisa’s older sisters, Barbie and Rosie, travelled all the way from Fort McMurray, Alberta, to be a part of the walk. They also brought special memorial T-shirts with them for the family members to wear.

The Hodders presented their donation once again at the annual Janeway Telethon this past weekend in St. John’s. NTV television hosted the Saturday night, all day Sunday event with live broadcasts from the College of the North Atlantic, Burin Campus. It was the Janeway Foundation’s 29th Annual Janeway Children’s Miracle Network Telethon weekend.

The family would like to say thank you to everyone who have sponsored them over the years.

The annual Janeway Telethon this past weekend realized almost $3 million in pledges from throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
