BURIN, NL — The Town of Burin has applied to the provincial government for a license to occupy Cook’s Lookout, a popular hiking trail within the town.
“Then the town has ownership of the land,” explained town manager Leo Hartson.
Owning the land will enable the town to seek government funding to repair and upgrade the trail, he said.
“It was always considered the Town of Burin’s but there was no actual ownership, and basically government policy has changed,” said Hartson. “Government will not put money into anything that you don’t have true ownership of, so that’s why we’re going through the process.”
Hartson said with so many people using the trail, the town would like to do some work to improve the site, including upgrades at the top of the trail looking out over Burin and installation of viewing glasses.
