ST. BERNARD’S, NL – The principal of Fortune Bay Academy has been placed on leave following news he has been charged with a number of sexual offences alleged to have been committed while teaching with the Fort Vermilion School Division in Alberta during the mid-1990’s.
“The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) became aware Friday that an employee has been charged with offences in Alberta,” district spokesperson Ken Morrissey said in an e-mailed statement.
“The employee has been placed on leave and will not be involved in any school activities.”
Morrissey added the safety of students is the NLESD’s top priority.
“We take this matter extremely seriously,” Morrissey stated.
Albert RCMP have confirmed that Sheppard, 51, has been charged with two counts of sexual exploitation of a young person, invitation to sexual touching, sexual interference, and sexual assault.
Sheppard will appear in provincial court in Fort Vermilion on Dec. 5.
