The 46-year-old from Twillingate — also known as a star in the Discovery Channel’s “Cold Water Cowboys” TV show — was sentenced Thursday at provincial court in Gander.
He pleaded guilty to three Fisheries Act regulations — two counts of failing to comply to conditions of a licence, which relate to overfishing capelin, and a single count of exceeding undersize herring quota of 10 per cent on one fishing trip.
The charges relate to two incidents — one in August 2016 when Gillett exceeded the daily amount of capelin while fishing in Bridgeport and the other in July 2016 when he was fishing herring in Port de Grave.
As part of the sentence, Gillett is also prohibited from fishing on the first day of the 2018 capelin season. He has one year to pay the total fine.
