Ice Crystals sparkle at year end show in Marystown

Sellout crowd for event featuring guest skater Kaetlyn Osmond

MARYSTOWN, NL — It was a packed house at the Kaetlyn Osmond Arena in Marystown on Saturday, April 14, for the annual ice show of the Ice Crystals Figure Skating Club.

The annual event is a chance for all the skaters to show the skills they have learned in the sport.

The show featured 12 group performances, as well as a number of solo performances by Olivia Ryan and Caley Mayo.

This was Mayo’s last year with the club and for her farewell performance she skated to the song “Stronger than I’ve Been.”

The skaters said they enjoyed this year’s show, as well as having an opportunity to skate with Kaetlyn Osmond.

“It really good this year,” said Shae-Ann Fewer,” We had lots of stunts, and Kaetlyn Osmond coming here was really great for us.”

Fewer said she enjoyed having the chance to skate with Osmond, saying the world champion is an inspiration to many in the club.

Osmond was the guest skater for this year’s show.

The 22-year-old told The Southern Gazette she enjoyed having a chance to skate on home ice.

“It felt absolutely fantastic being back on Marystown ice. It’s the first time I’ve been able to skate at my (home) rink since it was re-named in 2014, so it was absolutely incredible to be there. And to see the entire club evolve in the last couple of years has been incredible.”

Osmond added that seeing the young skaters reminded her of how she was at that age.

“Anyone young always reminds me of why I started skating,” she said. “So seeing them all out on the ice today was definitely a flashback (in) time.”

The theme of this year’s ice show was celebrating a decade, to acknowledge Karen Jones’ 10 years as coach with the club. To help mark the anniversary the senior performers put together a thank-you performance to surprise Jones.

“I had no idea they were planning that,” she said. “I was told after they would hide in the dressing room and wait for me to leave the arena so they could practice.”

Jones said the club put on a fantastic performance.

“I'm so happy with the way it turned out.”
