Local man facing animal cruelty charges

A Winterland man will appear in Provincial Court Mar. 5 at 9:30 a.m. to enter pleas to animal cruelty charges.

Burin Peninsula RCMP responded to an animal complaint Jan. 6 in the Town of Winterland. The ensuing investigation, supported with assistance from the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer for Newfoundland and Labrador, resulted in the owner of the farm being charged.

The officers located eight dead animals – five calves, two sheep and a goat.

The 49-year-old male is facing a criminal charge of animal cruelty as well as three charges under the Animal Health and Protection Act. He was arrested Feb. 11 and appeared in court on the same date.

He was released from custody and is on strict conditions including not being permitted to have the custody or control of any animal.
