Farmers across Newfoundland and Labrador are opening their doors to visitors this Sunday.

Open Farm Day allows the public to get a behind-the-scenes look at operations producing vegetables, berries, honeybee products and livestock.

Merv Wiseman, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture, said it’s an opportunity to showcase the industry and educate the public about where food comes from.

“Events like this also provide great agriculture awareness and raise the profile of topics like food security while families enjoy a fun day on the farm,” he said in a news release from the provincial government.

According to the news release, the agriculture industry provides 6,500 jobs in this province.

A dozen farms from Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s are participating this year, down from 19 last year. To view participating operations, visit http://www.nlfa.ca/open-farm-day-2017.
