Federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould was in St. John's today (Tuesday) announcing money for a trial program providing free legal advice to victims of sexual assault.

The $3.2 million over the next five years will pay for a variety of different programs to help victims of crime.

But the centrepiece was $250,000 per year over three years, which will provide independent legal advice for sexual assault survivors.

This idea is something that other provinces and territories have tried, to supplement the regular work of victims' services.

Frances Knickle, the director of public prosecutions, said that the Crown attorneys work in service of justice generally, but that's not exactly the same as being the lawyer for the victim.

She said that dedicated legal advice for victims will help maintain the impartiality of the Crown attorneys while also providing support to victims.
