CLARENVILLE, NL — Weeks after announcing his intention to try for the Liberal nomination of the Bonavista-Burin-Trinity federal riding, Clarenville lawyer Stacy MacDonald has decided not to file nomination papers.

In a Facebook post on Sept. 28, MacDonald says the main reason for deciding against running was family.

“As you know, this nomination may lead, for whomever wins, to an MP position requiring the MP to spend approximately half of the year or more in Ottawa and a large portion of the remaining year working throughout the district, which is very large,” reads the post.

“Although I may have been ready to make this sacrifice for the good of the district, I do not feel I have the right to impose this sacrifice on my children, who are too young to truly understand and appreciate its consequences on them.”

Former MP Judy Foote officially resigned from the position this past week in the House of Commons in Ottawa.

MacDonald issued a press release in mid-September announcing his desire to seek the Liberal nomination, joining Pete Soucy, Merv Wiseman and Churence Rogers as interested nominees.

MacDonald thanked everyone who supported him early in his campaign, both publicly and privately, and encouraged the people of Bonavista-Burin-Trinity to become involved in choosing who will next represent them in Ottawa.
