Clarenville police on scene of explosive removal at Bunyan’s Cove dump

Clarenville RCMP are on the scene of Bunyan’s Cove dump this morning after a local man discovered an explosive in the area.

According to police, they received a call yesterday evening, after a “small piece of military ordnance” was found at the dump.

Cpl. Shawn Skinner told The Packet the object is being disposed of this morning. The RCMP explosives disposal unit in St. John’s was called to the scene.

Cpl. Skinner says there is no indication where the object came from at this point.

“That part is still under investigation,” said Skinner. “We’re not sure where it came from or how it ended up in the dump but we will be following up on that.”

This was the third instance in recent weeks of a found explosive.

Last week, two sticks of dynamite were found in a shed in Durrell — in the Twillingate area — and a live cannonball was discovered in a basement in Burin.

In both cases, the objects were removed without incident by the RCMP explosives disposal unit.
