Frozen vegetable insect confirmed as June bug

After conversations with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Lori Anstey’s suspicions were confirmed last week.

An insect that the Gander resident found in a bag of frozen vegetables – Co-op Gold brand frozen stir-fry blend - while cooking supper earlier this year was, in fact, a green June bug.

“The agency inspected the factory, in Saskatchewan, to make sure everything was up to par, and it was,” said Anstey. “They actually have an x-ray scanner to pick up anything like that as the vegetables go through. But I guess with the cut of the vegetable and the way it was on it, it never got detected.”

Anstey said she was informed there were no other June bugs complaints with the product and that her family wasn’t at any health risk.

However, the gross out factor remains.

“We haven’t bought mixed frozen vegetables since,” she said. “If it was a fresh product and there was something in it, you wouldn’t really be surprised by it.

“But because it passed through the factory, was processed, bagged and frozen and still go through it’s gross.”
