Returning for another successful Youth Ventures season are the members of the local band EvenTide.
The members of EvenTide have been an active band for over four years with two CDs to its credit and an established reputation. The band made the Burin Peninsula proud last year by winning the provincial Youth Ventures award for High Achievement in Culture and Tourism.
So why would an established business join YV? There are plenty of services it can still offer.
Eventide will be getting assistance with its marketing for example. This area can be a big expense for businesses.
In case you're unfamiliar with Eventide, it's a traditional band that blends old with new. All the band members are between the ages of 18 and 23, and are all Burin Peninsula natives.
Their popularity isn't limited by their ages or location though. They've played high profile shows all over the island including St. John's, Twillingate, Eastport and Fogo Island. The band has also travelled to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, to showcase its talent at the well-known 'Newfie Pub'.
The band is comprised of the brother-sister team Darrell and Vanessa Jackman, along with Michael Rennie and Ryan Baker. Between them they play a variety of instruments including button accordion, guitar, fiddle, bodrhan, mandolin, tin whistle, bass guitar, harmonica and banjo as well as vocals!
The band performs a number of traditional tunes as well as new arrangements and songs written by them, such as the title track of their second CD 'And the Moon Did Shine', written by Darrell Jackman and Erica Short.
The talent doesn't stop there though, Michael has been playing accordion since he was five years old! He even released a solo CD at the age of 9. He's also a talented step dancer and occasionally dances while playing accordion.
Vanessa, 19, is not only musically talented, she is also is a very artistic individual and enjoys drawing, sketching and oil painting. The picture seen on Eventide's debut album, 'Off the Rocks', as well as the cover of Eventide's second album, 'And the Moon Did Shine', are paintings completed by Vanessa.
Ryan, 19, has been playing accordion since age 12, and credited it as one of his favorite pastimes. Over the years Ryan has acquired an impressive collection of accordions, and is always on the lookout for new editions.
Along with singing vocals and playing various instruments, Ryan has been playing the accordion with Eventide since 2005.
EvenTide will be keeping itself busy in the coming months, playing at local and provincial events all summer long. Be sure to check out their website at 'www.eventide-nl.com' or pick up a CD. They are available at a variety of stores throughout the province, or from the band members.
EvenTide would like to extend a special thank you to all those who supported them over the past year through concert attendance and CD purchases. EvenTide also acknowledged the help members have received from their family and friends, especially Calvin Jackman, band manager, who has assisted the band in the arrangement of all shows and gigs since their beginning.
