Many stories are told of some greedy poachers coming in with their first quota only to unload them in a waiting truck and then return to look for a second quota. And apparently this is done in a very brazen fashion. I guess they know they can do this without any fear of being questioned, not to mention being charged.
Then there are stories of murres being sold on the black market. How can these illegal activities be allowed to continue?
What is the purpose of having quotas when there is nobody to enforce the regulations? Why do DFO people not make themselves more visible to those (so-called hunters). Doesn’t the “O” in DFO have some bearing on life in and on the ocean? Where are the wildlife people, now that the moose season has closed? Does nobody care about the plight of the murre?
We are told that murres do not nest until they are five years old and then they lay a single egg. With the present-day slaughter of these birds, one wonders how many ever survive the first five years. We are all familiar with the demise of the great auk; one can only wonder if history is not repeating itself in the case of the murre.
