Carbonear’s Sandra Smith golden at Special Olympics World Winter Games
A Carbonear athlete earned a gold medal for Team Canada Tuesday at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria.
Four Marystown athletes joined eight other athletes from Clarenville and surrounding areas to represent the Eastern Region in Athletics at the 2012 NL Summer Games.
Bob Hollett of Burin coached the athletes in their events in Carbonear.
This is the first time in eight years Burin Peninsula athletes have competed in athletics in the NL Summer Games. Our four athletes had a successful showing with two brining back a combined total of five medals, while the other two athletes had respectable finishes in their events.
Megan Ryan won three medals – two silver in the 1500 metre run and 3000 metre run along with a bronze in the Javelin. She also had two fourth place finishes in two Relays.
Joey Pittman won a pair of medals including two silver in the 100 metre Sprint and the High Jump. He also had a fifth place finish in a Relay.
Josh Parrott placed fifth in the High Jump and, despite an injury, came seventh in the Long Jump.
Peter Ryan placed sixth in the shot put; eighth in the javelin and ninth in the 400m Sprint.
The athletes would like to thank the Mariners Athletic Running Club for its support.
