Gord Dunphy has announced he is stepping down as Challenge Cup commissioner and senior men’s vice president with the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association (NLSA).

The St. Lawrence native has served in the roles for the past eight years.

He released a statement Tuesday evening saying he would not be seeking a fifth term during the NLSA’s spring planning meeting next month.

Dunphy said he will undergo a second spinal surgery this year and it’s imperative that he focuses on his health.

He said he feels Challenge Cup and senior men’s soccer is very healthy in the province at the moment.

“While one must always feel a need for further development of the game at all levels, I do believe that the sport of soccer in Newfoundland and Labrador, in general, has outgrown all other NL sports and is currently flourishing,” he said in the statement.
