MARYSTOWN, NL – The Jones sisters from Marystown are excited to be on the roster for the U16 provincial girls’ hockey team competing in the 2017 Atlantic Challenge Cup.

Kathy Senior, who plays with the Tripen AAA midget team is returning for her second year with the provincial team.

Sarah Jones, who also played in last year’s Atlantics, said she was happy to be selected for the team again; however, she hopes the team’s return to the Atlantics proves more favorable this time around.
“(Last year) we got third,” explained Jones, who plays center/ right wing. “So, I’m hoping (we) get at least second this year.
“It’s a privilege – I am happy to get to play again this year, especially with Maggie.”
Although Sarah has played with the team in the past, it’s a first for sister Maggie.
“I’m pretty happy,” Maggie said of making the team. “Especially (seeing) how this is my first year trying out and I get to play with my sister too.”
Maggie said that with 8 other net-minders trying for a spot on the team, she was up against some though competition as she got between the pipes during try-outs.
The sisters took part in two try outs before being named to the team, with the initial one being held in Paradise, from there the pair moved onto the final round in Gander.
Kathy Senior, who plays with the Tripen AAA Midget team, also made the roster.
“I feel very grateful to have been selected to help represent Newfoundland Labrador for the second year running,” she said.
“It’s so exciting to think that I’m getting to play at highest level for female hockey in this province.”
She added that is has taken a lot of hard work and dedication
“I’ve been training all year to make it to where I am today, (I am) looking forward to the experience, the competition and making new friends. Hopefully we will come together as a team and bring home the gold.”
