MARYSTOWN, NL — A familiar sound filled the aisles of the local Sobeys store as members of the Grades 4 and 5 choir from Sacred Heart Academy, store staff and family members performed “The Star of Christmas.”
The tune is commonly heard this time of year as part of Sobeys’ advertising campaign during the holiday season.
Each Sobeys store hosted an event where employees and community members came together to sing the song.
Performances were filmed and placed online for voting. The store with the highest number of votes by Dec.13 will win $5,000 for a non-profit or community group of their choosing.
Local Sobeys manager Todd Badcock said they have selected the Sacred Heart Academy Playground fundraiser should they receive the most votes.
Students excited to take part
Jessica Foote, music teacher at the school and choir director, said Badcock invited the students to take part in the event.
Foote said choir members were happy to get involved.
“They’re thrilled,” she said. “They’re just so very, very excited.”
Members of the choir were also treated to a reception following the performance courtesy of the store.
The Southern Gazette took the opportunity to speak to some of the choir members about the experience.
“I think it was very fun,” said Brooke Babstock, a Grade 4 student. “I definitely hope that we get lots of votes.”
Abby McCarville, also in the fourth grade, said she was excited to take part, but was nervous about the video contest.
“(I have) mixed emotions (but) I’m excited.”
In a statement provided by Sobeys in Marystown, store officials thanked choir members and their teacher for taking part in the event.
“Ms. Foote embraced the idea, and worked with the choir in preparing for the video,” according to the statement. “A sincere thanks to Ms. Foote, the students of the choir, the parents, school administration, and our employees for being involved in the event.”
