PILLEY’S ISLAND, N.L. — Most school-time pranks are shunned upon by authority figures, but Nikita Roberts can attest to the fact at least one led to an award.
The Grade 11 Dorset Collegiate student saw the School Milk Foundation posters around the Pilley’s Island school promoting “Milkalicious”, a social media challenge.
The contest for students in Grades 7-12 was to snap photos of what goes best with their milk and post it to Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. As a joke, Roberts decided to have some fun with the contest.
She created an Instagram account — milkalicioussmilk — and started photographing and recording milk “doing” different things around the school. There were photos taken of the milk on a desk in a class, playing the card game Skip Bo, with glasses on doing some silent reading, next to a painting of the earth depicting it as being in the milky way, and recorded taking a ride in the elevator.
“I just thought it was a stupid little gimmick,” Roberts said. “I decided if I was going to do it, I wasn’t going to do it on my own account. So, I got the idea one day to create a school Instagram account. I just posted captioned pictures of the milk around school doing different things.”
She said friends around school started finding out what she was doing, and it seemed to just be a bit of fun to break up the monotony of a school day.
“It was pretty obvious when someone holds the same milk in their hand all day, and they are not drinking it,” she said.
Roberts eventually looked into the contest a bit more, and found out there were only five entries. At that point, she said she liked her chances.
“I was still a bit surprised when I won,” she said.
While she may not have taken it real serious in the beginning, it proved to be a worthwhile effort. She won a MacBook Air for her creative contest entry.
