BURIN, NL – Fans of Newfoundland artist Ed Roche were able to purchase a piece of his artwork while helping raise funds to continue the projects started by the late Tom Hollett.
The Step-A-Side Art Gallery in Burin held an auction this past weekend at the Burin Expedition Hall, where prints from Roche’s “Placentia Bay Collection” were sold to the highest bidder.
“This is a commitment we had made,” explained Evelyn Grondin Bailey, of Step-A-Side gallery. “Ed Roche had donated the (prints)… for (us) to exhibit for the summer, which we did from May through to the end of September, and at that time they were to be put on auction.”
While the total from the sale is yet to be tallied, Bailey said they raised between approximately $6,000-$7,000 for the Tom Hollett Memorial Foundation.
Twenty pieces from the collection were sold during the weekend event. The remaining eight pieces will be put on exhibit at the gallery, where they will be available for sale.
Bailey explained most of the pieces sold for around the minimum bid of $325, but anyone wishing to purchase a print will now see an increase in price.
“As they’re sold the proceeds will be going into the trust, and of course they will be more expensive than at the auction – everybody got a good deal there but unfortunately they won’t be able to get that good a deal at the gallery.”
However, she added, “…it will be more (money) for the foundation.”
