Bay Roberts eyeing golf course

If everything goes well, the Town of Bay Roberts could be getting a nine-hole golf course in the near future.

The owners of the Riverview Motorcross Park are exploring putting a golf course in the area beside the park.

During the town’s regular council meeting on Nov. 24, officials dealt with an application for the purchase of Crown Land near the Riverview Motorcross Park in Butlerville that would explore bringing the game of kings to Conception Bay North. Pitcher’s Pond Golf Course currently operates in Whiteway.

“It sounded very interesting for starters,” said Bay Roberts Mayor Philip Wood. “Golf is a sport that is growing in popularity. Some are into it more heavily, while others are more leisurely. The same applies to a lot of residents from the Bay Roberts area.

“I thought it was quite promising for a lot of golfers.”

The application was moved to the town’s planning committee, however it is for the town’s recommendation and not its approval. The provincial government would handle any such approval.

“Usually with any of these approvals, they’re looking for … the municipal recommendation and they can’t advance their application without it,” said Chief Administrative Officer Nigel Black. “For any future development should they get the land, they would have to come through council and go through the development process.”

The application for the purchase of the land was made by the current owners/operators of the motorcross park. Wood sees any potential golf course as a positive for the town economically.

“It has the potential to attract new people to Bay Roberts,” he said. “The park seems to be doing quite well in attracting people and in talking to business people in the Butlerville area in particular, the convenience stores are doing quite well with all the travel back and forth.

“I see golfing as doing the same thing.”
