With great sadness the family of Mary 'Ethel' Chinn announce her passing on February 9th, 2017. Born in Garnish, Nfld., May 13th, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Anne (née Marsh) Grandy, and was predeceased by her husband, Garfield Chinn, 8 years earlier. She is survived by her daughters, Catherine MacPhee of Calgary, AB, Angela Tyler (Keith) of Lr. Sackville, NS, Grandson, Ian MacPhee of Calgary, AB, and great grandson, Kristian Root of Calgary, AB. In addition to parents and husband she was predeceased by 1 sister and 4 brothers. Having lost her mother in infancy, Ethel was adopted by Maggie and John Cluett and their loving family. And she was reunited with her natural family when she was a young girl. Several years later she was taken under the wing of Rev. and Mrs. French in Flat Islands, Placentia Bay, Nfld. During WWII she came to Halifax, to the home of Mr. & Mrs. Peter Mitchell and although a domestic, was treated more like a family member. Ethel was a hard-working Newfoundlander, a devoted wife and a loving mother with an immense inner strength and a beautiful smile. Married to a seaman, she was the solid anchor in the family. Ethel and Garfield had a marriage that was rare magic, and her happiest moments were spent in his arms as they danced 'round the floor. On Saturday mornings Ethel enjoyed listening to Newfie Brew with Jim and Beatrice Francis, and she was always delighted to hear a song dedicated to her and Garfield. Ethel loved WWE and she liked most of the wrestlers, but if one of them hurt her favorite, John Cena, then that poor wrestler was in for a real tongue-lashing. On her 97th birthday she was at the Halifax Forum watching the WWE in real life action. And everyday there was a phone call with her best friend, Rita Barkhouse, true friends for many years. In the last years Geri Parsons was her caregiver and companion, and Ethel looked on her as a loving daughter. Service of Remembrance will be held on Monday, April 17 at 1:30 pm, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax followed by a grave side service at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Ethel's memory to the Alzheimer's Society.
